k-6 Mathematics
Our eager children have a real thirst for learning and our excellent staff team are committed and dedicated in ensuring that each and every child achieves. We have high standards and expect the best.

Mathematics
Mathematics provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in mathematics and numeracy. Students will have the opportunity to develop increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems relevant to their present and future needs.
By studying mathematics, students develop essential numeracy knowledge and skills and develop an understanding of concepts in:
- Number and Algebra
- Measurement and Space
Statistics and Probability
Students will develop an understanding and apply a range Working Mathematically interconnected processes:
- communicating
- understanding and fluency
- reasoning
problem solving
A student develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through:
- exploring and connecting mathematical concepts
- choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems
- communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly.
Explicitly Teaching Mathematics
At Salamah College, explicit teaching is our key instructional model, designed to enhance student understanding and engagement. This method involves clear, direct instruction where teachers model problem-solving strategies and mathematical concepts step-by-step. During lessons, teachers utilise visual aids, demonstrations, and guided practice to ensure students grasp the foundational skills before moving onto more complex independent tasks. Regular feedback is provided, allowing students to reflect on their learning and make adjustments as needed. This systematic approach not only builds confidence in their mathematical abilities but also fosters a collaborative classroom environment where students feel supported in their learning journey.
Maths Mastery (3-6)
At Salamah College, the Maths Mastery Series is a Direct Instruction program where students in Grades 3-6 complete daily mathematical questions. Maths Mastery Series is data driven and a powerful diagnostic tool that maps student progress. Student responses enable feedback to specific target misunderstandings.
Outline of Maths Mastery program:
- maps student progress
- identifies precisely where and when students experience difficulty
- contains inbuilt assessment and correction procedures
- instils fluency and automaticity in fundamental math skills
